Symptoms of malaria

Preventing malaria
Many cases of malaria can be avoided. An easy way to remember is the ABCD approach to prevention:
Awareness of risk – find out whether you’re at risk of getting malaria before travelling Bite prevention – avoid mosquito bites by using insect repellent, covering your arms and legs, and using an insecticide-treated mosquito net Check whether you need to take malaria prevention tablets – if you do, make sure you take the right antimalarial tablets at the right dose, and finish the course Diagnosis – seek immediate medical advice if you develop malaria symptoms, as long as up to a year after you return from travelling
Side effects
Like all medicines, doxycycline can cause side effects, although not everyone gets them.
Common side effects These common side effects happen in around 1 in 10 people. Keep taking the medicine, but talk to your doctor or pharmacist if these side effects bother you or don’t go away:
a headache feeling sick or vomiting being sensitive to sunlight Serious side effects Serious side effects are rare and happen in less than 1 in 1,000 people.
Call a doctor straight away if you get:
Bruising or bleeding you can’t explain (including nosebleeds), a sore throat, a high temperature (38C or above) and you feel tired or generally unwell – these can be signs of blood problems.
Severe diarrhoea (perhaps with stomach cramps) that contains blood or mucus, or lasts longer than 4 days ringing or buzzing in your ears
Serious skin reactions or rashes, including irregular, round red patches, peeling, blisters, skin ulcers, or swelling of the skin that looks like burns – these could be signs of a rare reaction to the medicine called Stevens-Johnson Syndrome
Yellow skin or the whites of your eyes go yellow – this could be a sign of liver problems joint or muscle pain that has started since you began taking doxycycline
Headache, vomiting and problems with your vision – these could be signs of pressure around your brain (intracranial hypertension)
A fingernail coming away from its base – this could be a reaction to sunlight called photo-onycholysis
A sore or swollen mouth, lips or tongue
Severe pain in your tummy, with or without bloody diarrhoea, feeling sick and being sick – these can be signs of pancreatitis difficulty or pain when you swallow, a sore throat, acid reflux, a smaller appetite or chest pain which gets worse when you eat – these could be signs of an inflamed food pipe (oesophagitis) or oesophageal ulcer
Serious allergic reactions
Allergic reactions to doxycycline are common and occur in more than 1 in 100 people.

Your doctor may need to change the doses of your medications or monitor you carefully for side effects.
be aware that antacids containing magnesium, aluminum, or calcium, calcium supplements, iron products, and laxatives containing magnesium interfere with doxycycline, making it less effective. Take doxycycline 2 hours before or 6 hours after taking antacids, calcium supplements, and laxatives containing magnesium. Take doxycycline 2 hours before or 4 hours after iron preparations and vitamin products that contain iron.
tell your doctor if you have or have ever had lupus (condition in which the immune system attacks many tissues and organs including the skin, joints, blood, and kidneys), intracranial hypertension (pseudotumor cerebri; high pressure in the skull that may cause headaches, blurry or double vision, vision loss, and other symptoms), a yeast infection in your mouth or vagina, surgery on your stomach, asthma, or kidney or liver disease.
you should know that doxycycline may decrease the effectiveness of hormonal contraceptives (birth control pills, patches, rings, or injections). Talk to your doctor about using another form of birth control.
